Monogram: NNW

The starting point for this three letter monogram - designed for a small pillow - was to come up with an interesting geometric border; something square or perhaps diamond-shaped.

Our Monogram Flourishes 2 has several partial designs that can be combined to make brackets that are spaced further apart or closer together. One two-part bracket (1923) has wishbone-shaped satin stitch elements with a diamond element filled in with manual seed stitches, and accented with candlewick stitches. In its original version it was intended as a flanking left-right bracket, but we thought it might be interesting to use four parts, combined to make a diamond shape.

Once those parts were combined in our software it was then a matter of finding interesting letters to place inside. Starting with something larger and vertical, we chose the letter W from the Olympia Monogram Set, which is digitized in satin stitch with a second color as a "shadow". To flank this letter we chose another simple but interesting satin stitch style - Diamond Monogram Set 4 - for the letters N and M. These letters are similar in column width to the center letter W, but with slightly different details.

To pull together all these seemingly disparate elements we carefully balanced the color palette - brighter colors for the letters with softer greens and yellows for the brackets.

The overall size is 6 1/4" (159mm) tall by 6 1/4" (159mm) wide

How we made these monograms

Embroidery software programs make it easy to delete elements, copy and paste elements from other designs, resize different aspects, and merge elements together into one new design. Each program is a bit different in how the Edit functions are managed. Once you have learned to use yours, creating new monograms from other monogram parts is creative and fun. Experiment with different arrangements and colors.
