Thread Tension

A good guide for checking thread tension - look at satin stitches from the back side. You should see a column divided into three equal parts: top thread 1/3, bobbin thread 1/3, top thread 1/3.

Feedback or Questions about "Thread Tension" (1)

I have a Janome 300 E and am monogramming. I think I am seeing some of the bobbin thread on the top side. What should I do? I do not know how to adjust the bobbin or ?

thank you, Judy

Home embroidery machines can be less user-friendly than commercial machines when it comes to adjusting thread tensions. Check your manual to see if there are instructions for adjusting the bobbin tension. Ultimately it may be worthwhile taking your machine into the dealer for service.

There are several factors that you can control that influence thread tension and correct bobbin thread showing through on the top. One is the backing that you use. Experiment with a different stabilizer, or a different number of layers.

The age of the thread you use can have an effect, as can the manufacturer. Again, some experimentation will tell you if the problem is really the thread, not the tension adjustments.

Home embroiderers have the ability to easily wind their own bobbin thread. Using the same thread for the bobbin that you are using for the top thread will minimize the visual result of incorrect tension.
