Satin Stitches

I own an embroidery company and have a client interested in your Romanesque I letters. She wants me to resize it to 10" for a queen size bedspread. When I try to do this, the density seems to break - how can I accomplish this - can you do it for me?

The issue with enlarging a satin stitch design to 10" tall has to do with the length of the satin stitches. Embroidery machines don't like sewing a stitch length longer than 12mm - this is a commercial machine setting that will generate a trim command for machines with automatic thread trimmers. Home machines without trimmers will still have trouble with this stitch length. In any case stitches that long are impractical and won't wear well.

Some resizing programs (and editing programs with resizing capability) will allow you to set a maximum stitch length. The program will then drop a stitch midway across a long satin stitch to shorten its length.

Another solution is to use your resizing program to convert the satin stitch to a fill pattern - you should also be able to control the stitch length with this option so you don't end up with an excessive number of stitches and a very time-consuming sewout.

Check the features in your resizing software - some experimenting may be necessary, and you should always sew a sample before proceeding with the real project.
