Synopsis: Young Johnny Hooker (Robert Redford) is a small time grifter learning the ropes from experienced Luther Coleman (Robert Earl Jones) in 1936 Illinois. They don't know that the money they swindle in one con belongs to mob boss Doyle Lonigan (Roberet Shaw) - and Luther is killed in retailiation. Hooker travels to Chicago to find legendary retired con-man Henry Gondorff (Paul Newman) - an old friend of Luther's - and convince him to pull a big con on Lonigan.

Scene: After Gondorff intentionally make's Lonigan's acquaintance at a poker game on a long train ride and wins all his money Lonigan is suitably incensed. Back in Chicago, Lonigan is slowly brought into the scheme - betting on the horses.

Monogram: Hooker visits Lonigan in his hotel suite. He is having room service breakfast, in a lounging robe with his initials - DL - embroidered on it.
