The Private Life of Henry VIII - 1933

Movie: The Private Life of Henry VIII - 1933

Director: Alexander Korda

Synopsis: A comedy of manners loosely based on the matrimonial adventures of the sixteenth-century English king who was married six times. Henry (Charles Laughton, in an Oscar-winning performance) divorces his first wife, Catherine of Aragon, has second wife Anne Boleyn (Merle Oberon) beheaded for lack of an heir, third wife Jane Seymour (Wendy Barrie) dies in childbirth, while fourth wife Anne of Cleves (Elsa Lancaster) is smart enough to beat him at cards and win a divorce. Fifth wife Katherine Howard (Binnie Barnes) makes him happy but breaks his heart when she is exposed as an adulteress, so she too is beheaded. Finally, in old age, he settles down with sixth wife Catherine Parr (Everley Gregg), a widow who looks after him.

Scene: The film uses the embroidered monograms on the marital bed as markers for the passing of the wives. The monogram for the first wife, Catherine of Aragon, isn't shown - the film begins with Anne Boleyn - and that of the sixth (and last) wife, Katherine Parr, also doesn't appear - he spends the rest of his life with her.

Monogram: Top to Bottom: 1. Henry and Anne Boleyn (H-A) 2. Henry and Jane Seymour (H-J) 3. Henry and Anne of Cleves (H-A) 4. Henry and Katherine Howard (H-K).
