Synopsis: Tess McGill (Melanie Griffith) is a young hard-working secretary, trying to get ahead, who lives in Staten Island, rides the ferry to work, and is employed in an uninteresting job a New York City financial conglomerate. She earned a business degree in night school. she gets little support from her live-in boyfriend Mick (Alec Baldwin) or her best friend Cynthia (Joan Cusack). She gets her big break when her boss Katherine Parker (Sigourney Weaver) breaks her leg on a skiing vacation - having gone without her boyfriend Jack Trainer (Harrison Ford). Katherine has already stolen one of Tess's idea for a client's acquisition plans. Tess decides to take action.
Scene: Tess and Jack have become a couple, Katherine has been revealed as the dishonest person that she is, and Tess has been given a job with Trask Industries. She is off to work on her first day.
