The Importance of Being Earnest - 2002

Movie: The Importance of Being Earnest - 2002

Director: Oliver Parker

Synopsis: Jack Worthing (Colin Firth) slips away from his country estate with the excuse that he must go to London to visit his wayward brother Earnest. Once there, he adopts the fictional identity of Earnest to disguise himself. He falls in love with Gwendolyn (Frances O'Conner), who declares she could only love an Ernest.. Her cousin Algerenon Montcrieff (Rupert Everett) is the only one who knows Jack's secret. In order to pursue Jack's ward Cecily (Reese Witherspoon), Algy decides to travel to the country and present himself as brother Earnest. Cecily is taken with him, and his name. When Jack returns, unexpectedly followed by Gwendolyn, it becomes clear that there are too many, or perhaps too few Earnests. This is a film adaptation of Oscar Wilde's 1895 stage play.

Scene: During a discussion of Jack's dilemma at his home in London, Algy pockets Jack's handkerchief as part of his plot. He later produces it in the country to bolster his identity.
