National Velvet - 1944

Movie: National Velvet - 1944

Director: Clarence Brown

Synopsis: Young drifter Mi Taylor (Mickey Rooney), following an address book left to him by his late father, finds his way to Sewels, an English coastal village in Sussex. He encounters the Brown family (Mrs. Brown's name is in the book). Encouraged by the Brown's 12 year old daughter Velvet (Elizabeth Taylor) Mi is first invited to dinner, then invited to stay, then offered a job. It develops that Mi's father had been a swimming coach to Mrs. Brown when she was young, encouraging her to swim the English Channel - a feat never before accomplished by a woman. Velvet has fallen in love with The Pie, a beautiful rambunctious gelding horse that belongs to a neighbor - and wins ownership of him in a raffle. Although afraid of riding horses, Mi knows them, and horse racing - and realizes that The Pie is good enough to compete in the Grand National Steeplechase. If they are able to raise the money for the entrance fee, and are accepted to the race, who will be the jockey? Women aren't welcome.

Scene: When they are accepted, but unable to find a trainer, Velvet convinces Mi to be the trainer. A jockey is hired - then fired on the eve of the race. Mi realizes that he must overcome his fear of riding horses - only to find the Velvet has donned the jockey clothes and is determined to ride the race herself.

Monogram: The Pie's saddle blanket for the race - with VB embroidered monogram.
