The Age of Innocence - 1993

Movie: The Age of Innocence - 1993

Director: Martin Scorsese

Synopsis: In this adaptation of the Edith Wharton novel, Newland Archer (Daniel Day Lewis) is a gentleman lawyer and heir to one of New Yorks best families. He is happily awaiting his impending marriage to May Welland (Winona Ryder), a sheltered young woman, when he is introduced to May's older cousin - Countess Ellen Olenska (Michelle Pfeiffer) - who has recently returned from Europe. She is followed by scandal, having reportedly run away from a bad marriage to a Polish Count. Divorce is an unacceptable outcome in 19th Century society, and Newland worries about its impact on their families. He is enlisted to disuade her from seeking one, but in the process finds that he is falling in love with her and with her ability to flout the rules of the social order. He now has doubts about his marriage to May.

Scene: Top: A ball at the home of Beaufort family, one of New York's big social events. Bottom: Newland discovers that the Countess has some secret relationships with men when he visits her late one evening on business.

Monogram: Top: The Beaufort painted B monogram in the center of the dance floor. Bottom: An embroidered monogram JB, in gold thread, in the lining of a top hat belonging to James Beaufort (Stuart Wilson)
