The Benny Goodman Story - 1955
Movie: The Benny Goodman Story - 1955
Director: Valentine Davies
Synopsis: The biography of swing band leader Benny Goodman (Steve Allen, in his big-screen debut), from age 10 (1919) to his legendary Carnegie Hall concert (1938) - with guest appearances by Gene Krupa, Lionel Hampton, Martha Tilton, Ziggy Elman and Sammy Davis Sr. (as arranger Fletcher Henderson).
Scene: Top: NBC auditions new bands for a Saturday night dance program.
Monogram: Top: B/G - the band's logo - on the drums and music stands. We were interested in the differences in the logos - they don't match. Some research turned up other films that included the "real" Benny Goodman Orchestra. Middle: The Powers Girl (1943). Bottom: Hollywood Hotel (1937). Gene Krupa's drum kit logo seems to have been its own design in at least 1937 - still in use in 1955, while the 1943 bandstand logos were changed for the 1955 bio-pick. The originals seem more distinctive. Maybe the bio-pick producers couldn't get permission to use them?
