Showboat - 1951

Movie: Showboat - 1951

Director: George Sidney

Synopsis: The "Cotton Blossom" is a riverboat that travels the Mississippi River, and is the cultural center of many small towns along the river, presenting musicals and gambling. When the leading performers in the show are reported as mixed-race they must leave the boat. Desperate for fill-in entertainers until the boat reaches New Orleans, Captain Andy Hawks (Joe E. Brown) reluctantly promotes his daughter Magnolia (Kathryn Grayson) to the leading female role, opposite gambler Gaylord Ravenal (Howard Keel), who has gambled away his ticket to New Orleans, but can sing. Their performance becomes a smash hit, they fall in love, and leave the boat for Chicago, where their fairy-tale romance begins to unravel. This is the film version of the hit Broadway musical, with score by Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein.

Scene: The couple are happy for awhile in Chicago, until Gaylord's gambling begins to ruin their lives.
