Synopsis: The story begins in 1929. 9 year old Chiyo is the second daughter of a poor fisherman in Yoroido. She and her older sister are sold to geisha house in Kyoto's Gion district. After many years of being not much more than a slave to the head geisha Hatsumomo (Li Gong) she is mentored to become a geisha by Hatsumomo's bitter rival Mameha (Michelle Yeoh), and grows up to become the geisha named Sayuri (Ziyi Zhang)
Scene: As a yong girl, Chiyo meets a kind stranger described as "The Chairman" (Ken Watanabe). He buys her ice cream, and gives her his handkerchief along with some coins. She offers the coins to a shrine in tribute, and vows to become a geisha and to meet him again. Years later, she is introduced to him at a sumo wrestling match.
Monogram: The Chairman's monogrammed handkerchief, with initials KI, which Sayuri has kept in a secret box. The chairman's name is Ken Iwamura.
