Monogram Styles Used:

Monogram: J

The starting point for this combination was a plan to do a single initial monogram - J - using our Gothic 13 XL Monogram Set. The artwork for this style was drawn in 1869.

The letter is composed of classic satin stitch columns that are "lashed" together with crossing satin stitch elements. The visual weight of the letter is all on the right side, with an open area in the upper left that leaves room for some further embellishment.

We know from past experience that the letter I can be a good resource for something abstract. Our website has a feature called "View Each Letter of the Alphabet in All Available Monogram Fonts". It sorts by letter of the alphabet, and brings up all letters - I in this case - on one page.

Modern styles didn't seem appropriate, but the I from Gothic Monogram Set 9 looked promising. We merged both the smaller and larger versions of this letter in our software together with the J, then experimented with adding additional copies. Eventually we ended up with a nice double version creating a decorative angle bracket. For a little extra bit of interest we went looking for something small, and added two copies of the open ring from the Baroque Monogram Set 1.

This monogram would be nice on a pillow sham or a shower curtain.

The overall size is 7" (177mm) tall by 5 1/8" (130mm) wide.

How we made these monograms

Embroidery software programs make it easy to delete elements, copy and paste elements from other designs, resize different aspects, and merge elements together into one new design. Each program is a bit different in how the Edit functions are managed. Once you have learned to use yours, creating new monograms from other monogram parts is creative and fun. Experiment with different arrangements and colors.
