Monogram: K

Monograms for men can be a bit challenging - so many styles are either overtly feminine or somewhat swirly. One of our dealers once described the essence of a masculine style as "vertical, straight up and down". This doesn't mean that the style needs to be dull.

Our Diplomat Monogram Set is a bold style from the 1920s. For a large satin pillow monogram, we started with the initial K, then thought about how to set it up with some additional decoration to give the overall design some presence.

The initial is surrounded with the brackets from our larger Diamond 5 XL Monogram Set - OK, but maybe a bit too simple, and something was needed to control the space between the letter and the diamond shape defined by the brackets. We liked the brackets from the Diamond Monogram Set 6, which have a thin satin stitch border surrounding an area of manual seeding stitch, which adds an interesting textural element. We deleted the letter portion of one of the letters from that style, enlarged each bracket about 25% in our editing program, and moved the bracket on each side around until the alignment seemed balanced. In addition to the brackets and the letter, this style also includes two french knot details. That seemed too fussy for this monogram, so we edited them out.

The overall size is 7" (177 mm) tall by 8 1/4" (210 mm) wide.

How we made these monograms

Embroidery software programs make it easy to delete elements, copy and paste elements from other designs, resize different aspects, and merge elements together into one new design. Each program is a bit different in how the Edit functions are managed. Once you have learned to use yours, creating new monograms from other monogram parts is creative and fun. Experiment with different arrangements and colors.
