Monogram: ESK

The typical three-letter monogram is arranged on some variation of a horizontal line. For this project we wanted something that is arranged on a diagonal.

We started with the letter K from our Diamond Monogram Set 8. This is the last name initial, and is composed of a satin-stitch letter surrounded by a set of brackets to create an overall diamond shape - more vertical than horizontal.

The other two initials might have been done with the same style, but for a little variation, and to emphasize the K as the last initial we used the E and S from Diamond Monogram Set 7, which are a similar diamond shape, but without brackets as part of the design.

The diagonal edges of the diamond shapes allow for several diagonal alignment possibilities. We chose to align the left edges, and used our software to make the E and S a bit smaller than the K. The letters are arranged in writing order, which is typically done when the letters are arranged left to right, and all the same height. The extra letter height for the K is primarily for emphasis and design. Unlike a horizontal arrangement, where the last initial would be larger and in the center, this arrangement, with a nod to gravity, places the largest, heaviest letter at the lowest position.

What's missing? The difference in letter size creates a space along the upper right side. To add just a bit more design interest we added a ring shape, extracted from our Victorian Monogram Set 11 - three copies.

The overall size is 5 5/8" (141mm) tall by 4" (102 mm) wide.

How we made these monograms

Embroidery software programs make it easy to delete elements, copy and paste elements from other designs, resize different aspects, and merge elements together into one new design. Each program is a bit different in how the Edit functions are managed. Once you have learned to use yours, creating new monograms from other monogram parts is creative and fun. Experiment with different arrangements and colors.
